Subject: Disestablishment of the Coastal Marine Automated
Network Station at Cape Arago Lighthouse near Coos Bay,
          Oregon in 2013
The Coastal Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) observation station
at Cape Arago, Oregon, (CARO3) will be decommissioned in 2013.
The station is at the Cape Arago Lighthouse at coordinates 43.342
North 124.375 West and is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. In
accordance with legislation signed in 2008, the Coast Guard will
turn the lighthouse over to the confederated tribes of Coos,
Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians in 2013.
The observation equipment must be removed to facilitate
maintenance of the lighthouse prior to the transfer. The National
Data Buoy Center does not plan to re-establish the observation
station.
Alternate stations are available to obtain wind information. The
National Estuarine Research System operates a platform near the
entrance to Coos Bay, (CHNO3) south slough reserve. Efforts are
underway to use this station in lieu of the Cape Arago station in
NOAA weather radio broadcasts from the Weather Forecast Office in
Medford, Oregon.

of CARO3 (labeled A) and the alternate wind observation site
CHNO3 (labeled B).
