BEGINNING JULY 16 2007...NWS WEATHER FORECAST OFFICES /WFOS/ WILL BEGIN INSTALLING SOFTWARE THAT WILL APPEND A TRACKING LINE TO THE FOLLOWING SHORT DURATION WARNINGS AND STATEMENTS:

TORNADO WARNINGS /TOR/
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS /SVR/
SPECIAL MARINE WARNINGS /SMW/
CONVECTIVE FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS /FFW/
EXTREME WIND WARNINGS /EWW/
SEVERE WEATHER STATEMENTS /SVS/
CONVECTIVE FLASH FLOOD STATEMENTS /FFS/
MARINE WEATHER STATEMENTS /MWS/
AREAL FLOOD WARNINGS /FLW/
AREAL FLOOD ADVISORIES AND AREAL FLOOD STATEMENTS /FLS/

THE TRACKING LINE IS ASSOCIATED WITH INSTALLATION OF ADVANCED WEATHER INTERACTIVE PROCESSING SYSTEM /AWIPS/ OPERATIONAL BUILD /OB/ 8.1 SOFTWARE ON AN OFFICE BY OFFICE BASIS. WFOS WILL BEGIN INSTALLING AWIPS SOFTWARE OB 8.1 ON OR ABOUT JULY 16 2007. FULL DEPLOYMENT IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 30 2007.

THE TRACKING LINE GIVES THE LOCATION /LOC/ AND MOVEMENT /MOT/ OF THE EVENT BEING TRACKED. IT COULD BE THE ESTIMATED LOCATION AND MOVEMENT OF:

- A TORNADO
- THE LEADING EDGE OF A GUST FRONT
- THE LEADING EDGE OF A HAIL CORE
- OTHER EVENT

THE LOCATION COULD BE A POINT OR A LINE.

1. THE TRACKING LINE WILL FOLLOW THE LATITUDE/LONGITUDE LINE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PRODUCT.

2. THE TRACKING LINE WILL ALWAYS BEGIN WITH THE FOLLOWING 16 CHARACTER STRING: TIME...MOT...LOC
3.  TIME...MOT...LOC WILL BE FOLLOWED BY

A.  A SINGLE SPACE
B. A FOUR DIGIT COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/ TIME FOLLOWED BY THE LETTER Z
C.  A SINGLE SPACE
D.  THREE DIGITS FOR DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT FOLLOWED BY DEG
E.  A SINGLE SPACE
F.  ONE OR TWO DIGITS FOR WIND SPEED IN KNOTS FOLLOWED BY KT
G.  A SINGLE SPACE
H.  ONE OR MORE LATITUDE/LONGITUDE COUPLETS.

4. IF THE SPEED IS LESS THAN 0.5 KNOTS...IT WILL BE ROUNDED DOWN TO ZERO /0/ KNOTS...BUT THERE COULD STILL BE A NON-ZERO DIRECTION.

AN EXAMPLE OF THE TRACKING LINE WITH PRECEDING TEXT FOLLOWS:

AT 425 PM MST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED 12 MILES SOUTHWEST OF AKRON...AND MOVING NORTHEAST AT 20 MPH.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WILL BE NEAR...AKRON AND 8 MILES WEST OF LATNER BY 500 PM MST

THERE ARE NO CHANGES TO THE AWIPS IDENTIFIERS...WMO PRODUCT HEADINGS OR PRODUCT ISSUANCE TIMES.

THIS CHANGE WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE NEXT UPDATE TO NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INSTRUCTION /NWSI/ 10-511...WFO SEVERE WEATHER PRODUCTS SPECIFICATION.
