FROM: John H. Ward Chief, Production Management Branch
SUBJECT: Changes to the NWS Production Suite

1. The NWS Telecommunication Operation Center (TOC) expects to have the replacement telecommunication gateway (RTG) system available to all customers by 1 November. Both the old and new gateway systems will be run in parallel for 30 days. With the availability of the RTG, both GRIB1 and GRIB2 files will become available. The six-month overlap period for GRIB2 will, therefore, begin on 1 November and terminate 1 May 2007. At that time, GRIB1 data will no longer be available on the RTG. In the event that customers can not complete the transition to GRIB1 by 1 May, requests to maintain some limited GRIB1 data will be addressed on a case by case basis.
PLEASE NOTE: An error has been uncovered in the RUC 20 km GRIB2 data, which
can not be immediately resolved. On 1 November the RUC 20 km GRIB2 grids may
be removed from the TOC server and only GRIB1 data may be available, if the
code change to correct the problem cannot be implemented.

2. The moratorium on changes to the NCEP production suite will continue until the new (Mist) Central Computer System (CCS) becomes operational no later than January 2007. A full parallel production suite is running on Mist. The /com file system on Mist is being populated from the parallel run and is not being mirrored from the operational system. 3. On 24 October, a scheduled data flow change (item 1193), was implemented to monitor a directory for new alerts and build queue entries. However, this item was withdrawn because DBNet’s process to check the status and restart the new daemon failed. A change is being made to prevent this failure and implementation of item 1193 will be re-attempted at 12Z on Tuesday, 31 October. As a result of this withdrawal, implementation of data flow item 1199 was postponed because it was dependent on the successful implementation of item 1193. This item will be implemented at 12Z on Wednesday, 1 November.
Advertised data flow change (item 1198) to begin sending SNOWDEPTH files to the
ftpprd server was not implemented this week due to the need for further
coordination within PMB. This item will be implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 31
October.

In addition, data flow change (item 1196) to stop sending GRIB1 RUC files to
the WOC disk server and to continue to only send GRIB2 was not implemented
because it was determined that certain RUC files were not able to be converted
correctly between GRIB1 and GRIB2 formats. A correction to program CNVGRIB is
required to remedy this problem. Therefore, data flow item 1196 is on hold,
until a fix can be implemented.

associated with upcoming implementations.
