GOES EAST/WEST, Sounder, Merged Sounding Product System (MSPS) Single Field of View (SFOV) operational implementation, November 1, 2005 10:00 AM EDT - Issued: 01 November 2005; 1000 UTC

*Topic*: The Merged Soundings Product System (MSPS) SFOV (Single Field Of View) operations will become operational on November 1, 2005. At this time we are aware that the only user ready to receive this product is NWS AWIPS, the Sounder Derived Product Imagery (SDPI) portion of the system. The SDPI will begin to flow on November 1, 2005 at 10:00 AM EST. The current product; 5X5 soundings bufr file to NCEP and AWIPS, ASOS SCP text file, and 1X1 CTP bufr files to NCEP will continue to run until Wednesday March 1, 2006, or until the users of these products have begun to use the new MSPS SFOV products. What this means for all users is that they need to begin transitioning to the new products as soon as they can, as well as testing and evaluating the effects the changes will have on there product systems and data operations. The Bufr files are and will be made available to users with appropriate test headers, these files will not replace the current operational files until the user is ready to receive them. The new 1X1 CTP bufr files need to be checked to make certain that there is no change to the current 1X1 files the users now receive. This product is supposed to be identical to the one that is in operational use in NCEP/EMC at this time. The 5X5 files from the new system will need to be evaluated for their accuracy and timeliness before they can be declared operational.. Individual products will be retired once users have made the switched to the new 1X1 product. There will be approximately four months for this transition to take place. *Impact on Users:* The MSPS SFOV 5X5 products are a sub-sample of the 1X1 product. The 1X1 bufr files are approximately 25X larger in size than the 5X5 bufr files (~ 20 mb to ~ 1 mb).
