          RADIOSONDE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM /RRS/ AND FLIGHT
          OF RECORD: EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 09 2005

EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 09 2005... NWS WILL TERMINATE UPPER AIR
OBSERVATIONS USING THE RADIO DIRECTION FINDING RADIOSONDES AND
TRACKING SYSTEM AT SALT LAKE CITY... UTAH.  APPROXIMATELY TWO
WEEKS LATER... EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 23 2005... NWS WILL
TERMINATE UPPER AIR OBSERVATIONS USING THE RADIO DIRECTION
FINDING RADIOSONDES AND TRACKING SYSTEM AT CORPUS CHRISTI...
TEXAS. UPPER AIR OPERATIONS WILL BE RESTORED USING THE RADIOSONDE
REPLACEMENT SYSTEM WITH NEW GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM /GPS/
RADIOSONDES. BOTH SITES WILL BE OUT OF SERVICE UP TO TWO WEEKS.
WHEN RESTORED SOME PARTS OF THE UPPER AIR CODED MESSAGES WILL BE
SIGNIFICANTLY LONGER.

SEE CHANGE NOTICE TIN05-34 FOR SPECIFICS OF THIS CHANGE. AS A
CONSEQUENCE OF THE CARIBOU TEST... CHANGE NOTICES TIN05-47 and
TIN05-48 ISSUED JUN 17 ALSO PROVIDE THE SPECIFICS OF THIS CHANGE.
NWS HAS BEEN COORDINATING WITH PARTNERS OVER THE LENGTH OF THESE
MESSAGES BECAUSE THEY ARE LARGER THAN ANTICIPATED. THE FORMAT HAS
NOT CHANGED.

STARTING NO SOONER THAN THE 0000 COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/
ON OR ABOUT SEPTEMBER 19 2005... FOR SALT LAKE CITY AND NO SOONER
THAN THE 0000 COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/ ON OR ABOUT
OCTOBER 03 2005... FOR CORPUS CHRISTI... TEXAS... THE
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RADIOSONDE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM RESULT IN A
CHANGE IN THE LENGTH OF CODED MESSAGES. THE WORLD METEORLOGICAL
ORGANIZATION /WMO/ NUMBER FOR SALT LAKE CITY IS 72572. THE WMO
NUMBER FOR CORPUS CHRISTI IS 72251. FORMAT OF THE MESSAGES WILL
BE THE SAME WMO FORMAT FOR CODED UPPER AIR MESSAGES IN USE WITH
THE MICROART LEGACY SYSTEM. THE NUMBER OF LEVELS IN THE CODED
MESSAGES WILL BE TWO TO THREE TIMES GREATER FOR THE TTBB AND
TTDD. THE NUMBER OF LEVELS IN THE TTAA... TTCC... PPBB... AND
PPDD PARTS WILL BE RELATIVELY UNCHANGED.  THESE CHANGES REFLECT
UPDATED CODING PRACTICES AND HIGHER RESOLUTION LEVEL SELECTION
CRITERIA. THE MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS OF THE PARTS OF THE CODED
MESSAGES FOLLOW:

TTAA: 15 LEVELS
TTCC: 10 LEVELS
TTBB: 135 LEVELS
TTDD: 40 LEVELS
PPBB: 40 LEVELS
PPDD: 40 LEVELS

IN ADDITION THE 31313 MESSAGE INDICATOR ASSOCIATED WITH THE
VARIOUS PARTS OF THE MESSAGE WILL BE INCLUDED WITH EACH PART OF
THE THERMODYNAMIC MESSAGE PARTS. FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON
