SUBJECT:FIRE WEATHER ZONE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION IN NORTH
CENTRAL OREGON AND SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON: EFFECTIVE
APRIL 1 2005

ON FRIDAY...APRIL 1 2005...AT 1200 UTC...4 AM PACIFIC STANDARD
TIME...THE BOUNDARY FOR OREGON FIRE WEATHER ZONE 609 /EAST SLOPES
OF NORTH OREGON CASCADES/ WILL BE EXPANDED NORTHWARD INTO
SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON TO MEET WASHINGTON FIRE ZONE 681. THE
EASTERN PORTION OF THIS EXTENSION WILL BE HIGHWAY 197 TO THE
DALLES... ALONG THE COLUMBIA RIVER EAST TO BIGGS...TO HIGHWAY 97
NORTH PAST GOLDENDALE TO SATUS PASS. THE AREA DESCRIBED ABOVE
WILL NO LONGER BE IN FIRE WEATHER ZONE 631. THE WESTERN BOUNDARY
OF THE NEW ZONE 609 CONFIGURATION WILL BE THE CURRENT WESTERN
BOUNDARY OF OREGON FIRE WEATHER ZONE 631. THE NEW NAME FOR FIRE
WEATHER ZONE 609 WILL BE THE EAST SLOPES OF THE NORTH OREGON AND
SOUTHERN WASHINGTON CASCADES.

THE REASON FOR THIS CHANGE IS THAT THIS AREA EXPERIENCES
METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS THAT MORE CLOSELY MATCH THOSE FOUND IN
OREGON FIRE WEATHER ZONE 609.  THE CONFIGURATION CHANGE IS
REFLECTED IN THE FOLLOWING PRODUCT. NOTE THE WMO HEADING AND
AWIPS ID ARE THE SAME:

EVEN THOUGH THE FORMAL NOTIFICATION FOR THIS CHANGE IS LESS THAN
120 DAYS... LOCAL FIRE WEATHER CUSTOMERS HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE
PROPOSED BOUNDARY CHANGE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. ALL CUSTOMERS IN THE
AFFECTED AREA ARE READY FOR IMPLEMENTATION.

UPDATED ZONE MAP SHAPEFILES ARE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD FROM THE
