SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT NCEP FTP SERVER..
NOTE...ALL URLS ARE LOWER CASE LETTERS.

NCEP anonymous ftp user...

Over the past year...the NCEP ftp server...
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov...has become increasingly congested and
has reached its capacity. We have been working towards a long-
term solution with the development of a scalable and robust NCEP
ftp/web farm. Due to the current problems with
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov...we are accelerating our schedule and
will make the new servers available for public anonymous ftp
access on 12z Monday December 17 2001. The new ftp servers will
be made accessible with the host name ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov.

We will continue to support the current
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov until Wednesday January 30 2002. During
the next seven weeks...NCEP will undergo a transition...making
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov content available on
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov. On January 31 2002 the host name of
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov will be reassigned to the new ftp servers
and the old server retired. From that point on, the new NCEP
anonymous ftp servers will be accessible with the names
ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov and ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov.

On Monday December 17 2001...ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov will be made
publicly accessible and will initially contain a subset of the
data currently available on ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov. This initial
subset of data on ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov will consist of
model data that is generated from the NCEP Central Computer
System. Be advised that ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov will use the
same directory paths and filenames as the NCEP Central Computer
System. This will simplify data identification and support...but
it also means the directory paths and file names will change when
switching from ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov to
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov. In order to assist you during this
transition...the following link contains a mapping between the
affected files on the two ftp servers:

ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data1/xref_to_ftpprd

Please note that operationally supported anonymous ftp services
are provided by the NWS Telecommunications Operations Center at
ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov . You are welcome to use NCEPs anonymous
ftp services. Any questions or comments you have about the NCEP
service can be sent to mailto:ncep.helpdesk@xxxxxxxx.

Thank you for your patience.
