     SUBJECT:     ASOS COMMISSIONING NOTICE...

     ON AUGUST 20... 1998 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) AND THE 
     FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) WILL COMMISSION THE FAA- 
     SPONSORED AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEM (ASOS) AT:
     
     OAKLAND-PONTIAC AIRPORT   (KPTK)
     PONTIAC... MI
     
     THE COMMISSIONING WILL OCCUR AT APPROXIMATELY 1800 UTC.  
     
     THIS BRINGS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMMISSIONED ASOSS TO 630 (295 NWS 
     SITES AND 335 FAA SITES).  COMMISSIONING OF THIS SITE MEANS THAT THE 
     ASOS NOW PRODUCES AUTOMATED... AROUND-THE-CLOCK OBSERVATIONS.
     
     THE NWS FORECAST OFFICE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS SITE... AS WELL AS THE 
     ASOS OPERATIONS AND MONITORING CENTER (800-242-8194) IN SILVER 
     SPRING... MARYLAND... WILL MONITOR ASOS PRODUCTS AND COORDINATE 
     MAINTENANCE ACTIONS AS NEEDED.  NOTE: BECAUSE ASOS OBSERVATIONAL 
     FORMATS ARE DIFFERENT FROM MANUAL OBSERVATIONAL FORMATS... AUTOMATED 
     DECODER PROGRAMS MAY REQUIRE SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS.
