GOES-10/GOES-9 Switch

NESDIS/NWS Joint Meeting July 9, 1998

A joint meeting of representatives from NWS/OM and
NESDIS/OSO/OSD/IPD/SSD occurred on Thursday, July 9, 1998 to
discuss issues with replacing the GOES-9 satellite as the
operational GOES-WEST satellite.

Information provided by SOCC:

GOES-9 Status:

The satellite (GOES-9) is currently operating with both momentum
wheels running, but with stong indications of impending failure.

SOCC plans to continue operations from GOES-9 while GOES-10
undergoes the activation steps.

If GOES-9 continues to function beyond the operational switch to
GOES-10, it will be moved to 105W and placed into storage.

GOES-10 Status:

GOES-10 completed initial steps of re-activation this morning,
with functional checkout planned to begin this afternoon.

Five days of contamination avoidance will begin this (Thursday)
evening, and continue through Tuesday, July 14, 1998. During this
period, data would be unavailable at night if an immediate call
up is required.

A move maneuver can be performed as early as Monday or Tuesday,
July 13/14 to begin the movement to the West station. With 2-3
days needed for INR (navigation) stabilization, SOCC stated that
GOES-10 could be expected to provide stable, navigated data for
operations starting in the Thursday/Friday, July 16/17 time
period.

GOES-8 Status:

The satellite is getting old, but there are no current
indications of impending failures.

The current engineering assessment is that the satellite should
last until the GOES-L launch, barring any unforeseen anomaly.

Issues covered at the meeting were:

GOES-10 will be moved to the 135W position currently occupied by
GOES-9.

GOES-L is scheduled for launch in a window 30 days either side of
June 1, 1999. This cannot be moved earlier.

GOES-10 will require 30 days after the maneuver to reach its
operational location.

As in the past, NESDIS is planning to provide imagery during the
move.
