ON JUNE 1... 1998 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) WILL
COMMISSION THE FAA-SPONSORED AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEMS
(ASOS) AT:
 
     ANCHORAGE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT  (PANC)
     ANCHORAGE... AK
 
     POST ROGERS MEMORIAL AIRPORT    (PABR)
     BARROW... AK
 
     KING SALMON AIRPORT    (PAKN)
     KING SALMON... AK
 
THESE COMMISSIONINGS WILL OCCUR AT APPROXIMATELY 0000 (MIDNIGHT)
ALASKA STANDARD TIME.  
 
IN ADDITION... THE NWS-SPONSORED ASOS AT
 
     ALTURAS    (KO00)
     ALTURAS... CA
 
WILL BE COMMISSIONED AT APPROXIMATELY 1800 UTC.  
 
THIS BRINGS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMMISSIONED ASOSS TO 567 (278
NWS SITES AND 289 FAA SITES).  COMMISSIONING OF THESE SITES MEANS
THAT THE ASOSS NOW PRODUCE AUTOMATED... AROUND-THE-CLOCK
OBSERVATIONS.
 
THE NWS FORECAST OFFICES RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE SITES... AS WELL
AS THE ASOS OPERATIONS AND MONITORING CENTER (800-242-8194) IN
SILVER SPRING... MARYLAND... WILL MONITOR ASOS PRODUCTS AND
COORDINATE MAINTENANCE ACTIONS AS NEEDED.  NOTE: BECAUSE ASOS
OBSERVATIONAL FORMATS ARE DIFFERENT FROM MANUAL OBSERVATIONAL
FORMATS... AUTOMATED DECODER PROGRAMS MAY REQUIRE SOFTWARE
MODIFICATIONS.
