SUBJECT:     ASOS COMMISSIONING NOTICE...

ON JANUARY 15... 1998 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) AND THE
FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) WILL COMMISSION THE
FAA-SPONSORED AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEMS (ASOS) AT:
 
     PURDUE UNIVERSITY AIRPORT (KLAF)
     LAFAYETTE... IN
 
     KALAMAZOO/BATTLE CREEK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KAZO)
     KALAMAZOO... MI
 
     SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS AIRPORT (KSUS)
     ST LOUIS... MO
 
THE COMMISSIONINGS WILL OCCUR AT APPROXIMATELY 1800UTC.  THIS
WILL BRING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMMISSIONED ASOSS TO 475 (252 NWS
SITES AND 223 FAA SITES).  COMMISSIONING OF THESE SITES MEANS
THAT THE ASOSS WILL PRODUCE AUTOMATED... AROUND-THE-CLOCK SURFACE
AVIATION OBSERVATIONS.
 
THE NWS FORECAST OFFICES RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE SITES... AS WELL
AS THE ASOS OPERATIONS AND MONITORING CENTER (800-242-8194) IN
SILVER SPRING... MARYLAND... MONITOR ASOS PRODUCTS AND WILL
COORDINATE MAINTENANCE ACTIONS AS NEEDED.  NOTE: BECAUSE ASOS
OBSERVATIONAL FORMATS ARE DIFFERENT FROM MANUAL OBSERVATIONAL
FORMATS... AUTOMATED DECODER PROGRAMS MAY REQUIRE SOFTWARE
MODIFICATIONS.
