PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA
105 PM CST WED FEB 21 1996

....NOTE TO BROADCASTERS AND OTHER MEDIA PROFESSIONALS...

THIS IS JUST A REMINDER THAT THE AUTOMATED WEATHER OBSERVING SYSTEM
REPORTS THAT ARE TABULATED ON THE HOURLY IOWA STATE WEATHER ROUNDUP
WILL NOT DECIPHER PRECIPITATION IN ANY FORM. THE SKY/WX COLUMN MAY
REPORT CLOUDY AND IT COULD BE RAINING OR SNOWING LIKE CRAZY. THE
LARGER CITIES IN IOWA HAVE HUMAN OR ADVANCED AUTOMATED SURFACE
OBSERVING EQUIPMENT WHICH CAN DETERMINE PRECIPITATION.

AS AN EXAMPLE...THE 1 PM REPORT FOR COUNCIL BLUFFS REPORTS A CLOUDY
SKY. IT IS ACTUALLY RAINING THERE. TO FIND OUT WHAT IS OCCURRING AT A
SITE...CHECK THE SHORT TERM FORECAST FOR THE LOCATION IN QUESTION.

DO NOT RELY SOLEY ON RADAR INFORMATION. THE NEW DOPPLER RADARS ARE
EXTREMELY SENSITIVE AND YOU MAY ACTUALLY INTERPRET YOUR RADAR DISPLAY
AS PRECIPITATION WHEN IN FACT IT IS ONLY CLOUDS. ONCE AGAIN...RELY ON
THE SHORT TERM FORECAST TO DECIDE WHAT IS WHAT.
