Yes, this is intentional. If you want to use gfortran instead, set
FC=gfortran before running configure.

Thanks, I'll pass these on to Dennis. But remember that the opendap
client is very experiemental, is off by default, and is being actively
worked on for the 4.1 release. A working opendap client is not part of
the 4.0.1 release - it's just in there for experimental purposes.
