There heve been some discussion about compressing a .nc file.
I would like to remind that this problem is addressed in the FAQ (using a file
compressor program is not the "right" approach), particularly the modification
made by Bill Noon at http://snow.cit.cornell.edu/noon/z_netcdf.html and its
discussion therein.
Unfortunately his patch refer to 3.3.1 source version and never went into the
following releases.
