netCDF browser for IDL

Hi,

This note is to announce the availability of ncbrowse, an IDL program that
implements an X browser for netCDF files. (IDL is a commercial package for
analyzing and visualizing scientific data. See the URL
http://sslab.colorado.edu:2222/projects/IDL/idl_ssl_home.html for more
information. Mention of IDL does not constitute an endorsement by the
Unidata Program Center.)

The ncbrowse program is available via anonymous FTP from

   ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/contrib/ncbrowse.pro

It was written by Matt Segur (msegur@xxxxxxxxxxxx), a high-school student
working at Unidata this summer.

The ncbrowse program provides a point-and-click interface for browsing
netCDF files.  Its capabilities include

 - display of netCDF dimensions, variables, and attributes;
 - plotting of one- and two-dimensional cross-sections of data;
 - display of two-dimensional variables or cross-sections using wire-frame,
   shaded surface, or contour plots;
 - animation of plots along a selected dimension;
 - plotting of variables that use "lon" and "lat" dimensions onto a map; and
 - online help

The ncbrowse program has been tested with IDL versions 3.5 and 3.6.
