to much data for disk

We are planning to use NetCDF for output from an Ocean Model.
The problem is that the model will generate massive amounts of
data and it is unfeasible for us to keep all the data on disk.
We would like to put the metadata to disk and data to tape.
Has anyone else done an implementation of NetCDF like this,
planning to, or even thought about it?

Thanks for any help in advance.
