Data transfer rate?

I am wondering if anyone has compared the data transfer rate for reading/
writing netCDF files to the rate obtainable with standard Fortran of C
files on various machines? In other words, what is the overhead one
pays for going through netCDF instead of a regular file when you need
to work _mostly_ with reasonably large chunks of data and occasionally
with smaller structures stored in the same file?

Thanks in advance for any info.
