ncdump functionality

I finally got around to installing ver. 1.11 of netCDF, and was a bit
disappointed to find that the functionality of ncdump had not changed
much (we had been running ver. 1.0).

One of the problems we have is that we like to look at the numbers
stored in the netCDF file, and when your file is large (ours go up
to 100 Mb) it is impractical to use ncdump as it is. Some time ago
I hacked up ncdump so it could be run interactively, and the user
could request variables to be output, and with that variable specify
ranges of each dimension - ie the user could look at just one number
within a 3D variable if desired.

My question is, how do other people look at the contents of large
netCDF files, or is this a bizarre thing to do?

Are there any plans to change ncdump officially? I don't particularly
want to upgrade my hack job with each new version of netCDF I install,
it's somewhat kludgy as it is.

(ps. I appreciate the new install.sh script very much)
