I as well.  I disabled it too.

At 22:37 Z, the connection to thelma was lost and then it came back at 
23:34Z.  The failover and reconnection was all seemless without restarting 
LDM.  The best part of the new method is only having one ldmd.conf file!  

For those that are curious, here is an example of the new system.

request DDPLUS  ".*"    unidata2.ssec.wisc.edu  PRIMARY
request DDPLUS  ".*"    thelma.ucar.edu ALTERNATE
