The problem is the creation of the template netCDF file, it appears that
the cdl is lacking unit attribute for sh  and a datetimeid variable. I
would run ncgen, ie

% ncgen -o output.nc lga.cdl

I would consult other cdls again, I think you missed something. If you
can't find the problem, send the cdl to me.

the lga.nc file does not exist. it gets created with the header info and
global attributes, but thats it.

Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: 0 WMO msgs, 0 GRIBs decoded, 0 written 
not sure why there is an error for sh. units for sh are g/kg or kg/kg so its
unit-less. i have compared my lga.cdl file to the netcdf files i have used in
the past and they match up. 
any suggestions? thanks...
