Dave,

The problem is the creation of the template netCDF file, it appears that
the cdl is lacking unit attribute for sh and a datetimeid variable. I
would run ncgen, ie

% ncgen -o output.nc lga.cdl

I would consult other cdls again, I think you missed something. If you
can't find the problem, send the cdl to me.

hi rob.

i am having a little trouble getting the gribtonc decoder to
work properly. my log file is short and not very sweet. i was
wondering if you might be able to diagnose the problem with this
info.
command line:

cyclone[bennett]138>gribtonc -l log -v lga.cdl lga.nc < eta.T00Z.GRBGRD00.tm00 the lga.cdl is the template for the netcdf file i want to create. i downloaded the eta (89 48km) from the nic.
the lga.nc file does not exist. it gets created with the header info and
global attributes, but thats it.
my log file looks like the following.

cyclone[bennett]140>more log
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: Starting Up
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: Error parsing units: none
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: lga.nc: can't get units attribute for variable
sh
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: lga.nc: no datetimeid variable
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: make_ncfile failed
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: can't create output netCDF file lga.nc, exiting
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: Exiting
Aug 04 14:31:07 gribtonc[15403]: 0 WMO msgs, 0 GRIBs decoded, 0 written
not sure why there is an error for sh. units for sh are g/kg or kg/kg so its
unit-less. i have compared my lga.cdl file to the netcdf files i have used in
the past and they match up.
any suggestions? thanks...

dave bennett
