19981201: COMET Case 013, S Calif Floods and Florida Tornadoes, now available

NOTE: The casestudies mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

We are pleased to announce the release of COMET case study 013,
Southern California Floods and Florida Tornadoes. Case study 013,
22-24 February 1998, covers a strong winter storm system that moved
over Southern California and brought heavy rain as tropical moisture
fed into the system. At the same time, an intense storm system moved
across Florida with tornadoes forming over the central part of the
state. Case 013 is now available for searching, browsing, and
ordering for FTP download through the CODIAC WWW system.

Case 013 was built to highlight the performance of the Eta model in
predicting the Southern California storm and to examine the need for
high-resolution models in areas of complex terrain. Case 013 includes
GOES-8 and -9 satellite imagery; radar data from Los Angeles, CA
(Vandendburg-VBX and Ventura County-VTX); as well as NOWRAD composite
radar imagery from WSI; surface and upper air observations; NCEP model
data; and textual products from the NWS Family Of Services (FOS). For
a detailed description of case study 013 as well as a lab exercise and
other training support documentation, see

SEARCH, BROWSE, AND FTP ACCESS

All of the individual datasets that are part of case 013 are available
through the CODIAC system for searching, browsing, and ordering
subsets of the data for delivery via FTP. Several datasets, in
particular, those archived as GIF images or GEMPAK surface files, can
be graphically browsed through the CODIAC web interface.

8MM TAPE STILL AVAILABLE

If you want all or most of the data for this case study, we are still
making an 8mm tape containing the entire case study available. The
tape can also be ordered through the CODIAC system. For details on
how to order a tape, see the web page:

E-MAIL LIST

An e-mail list, casestudies@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, is available for people
interested in case study data. The case studies list has been created
to enable the community of case study users to communicate with each
other. New capabilities and new case studies will be announced on the
Case Studies mail list. For information on how to subscribe, go to:

    http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cometCases/mailList.html

QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

If you have any questions or comments about this or other COMET case
studies or about how to access the data through CODIAC, please send
e-mail to

    support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We are always interested in suggestions on how to make the case study
data easier to access and more useful for the users. If you have any
suggestions or comments, including what cases you would like to see
available, again, please send e-mail to support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
