Unidata offers equipment grants to support a variety of projects
The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2012 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2012, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.
The UCAR Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) has released Nujan version 1.4.1. Nujan is a pure Java writer for HDF5 and NetCDF4 files. Nujan is 100% open source and is released under the MIT license. Nujan is intended to be useful in situations where portability and a simplified development process are more important than access to the complete HDF5 feature set.
Unidata Program Center developer Yuan Ho, along with John Clyne of NCAR's Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL), will be presenting a data analysis workshop at the American Geophysical Union's Fall meeting in San Francisco. The workshop will provide an overview of several of the open source software packages that are most relevant to researchers and educators in the geosciences, including Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), NCAR's Visualization and Analysis Platform for Ocean, Atmosphere, and Solar Researchers (VAPOR), and the Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS-V) from the the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and NCAR's NCAR Command Language (NCL).
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the College of Charleston (a nationally-recognized, public liberal arts and sciences university) invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Atmospheric Physics, beginning fall 2012. The successful candidate must have a commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate physics or astronomy in addition to atmospheric sciences. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to develop and sustain a research program that involves undergraduate students. A PhD in physics or in a closely-related atmospheric science field with a strong physics background is required. Teaching and/or post-doctoral experience is preferred.
The Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) of the University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks applicants at the Assistant (tenure track) Professor level for one position, effective Fall 2012. This is a 10-month appointment that allows supplementary summer salary from research funding. Candidates with experience in the following two possible areas are encouraged to apply: Ocean – Atmosphere Interactions or Climate-Cryosphere Dynamics and Feedbacks.
The Unidata Program Center is pleased to welcome six new members to our governing committees. Committee members normally serve three-year terms; these terms are finishing up for four members of the Users committee and two members of the Policy committee. New members and those finishing their terms will overlap for one meeting, which will take place in mid-October, 2011.
The UPC staff looks forward to working with our new committee members, and to having all the current members of both committees at the Program Center in Boulder, Colorado for the October meeting.
The following provides a brief introduction to the scientists joining Unidata's committees. You can additional information about the governing committees, including contact information for committee members, on the Governing Committees page.

The NOAA Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites North Carolina (CICS-NC) is seeking a Meteorologist / Computer Scientist / Research Associate to work in Asheville, NC, in collaboration with scientists at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The successful candidate will provide hands-on computer programming and software engineering support for the National Climate Model Portal (NCMP) in the development, implementation, and tools for scientific climate data access, and interoperability.
The Unidata Program Center will be moving into the Anthes building.
The Unidata Program Center has spiffy new lodgings.
Update: Our move to the new building is (more or less) complete. Come by and visit us in our snazzy (if temporary) new building.
It's only temporary, and it's only across the street, but the Program Center offices (along with the offices of most of the programs that make up the UCAR Community Programs — UCP) will be moving to new digs during the week of August 8, 2011. As a result, we may be slow to respond to phone calls and e-mail support questions during the transition. If all goes according to plan, we'll be in the new space beginning on Monday, August 15th.
