The Weather Network is looking for a scientific programmer to design data processing methodologies which enable the integration of satellite, radar and other observational datasets with meteorological forecast datasets to create value-added "Nowcast" products, among other duties. The position is in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
During late March and early April 2012 the Unidata Program Center conducted a survey of Cooperative Opportunity for NCEP Data Using IDD Technology (CONDUIT) users to determine which of the model output currently included in the feed are in use, which are candidates for removal from the feed, and which new model runs (if any) should be added to the feed.
UCAR's COSMIC Program Office invites you to attend the Sixth FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC Data Users Workshop, to be held at UCAR's Center Green (CG1) conference facility in Boulder, Colorado, USA from 30 October to 1 November 2012.
The Unidata Program Center would like to remind members of our community that the deadline for the 2012 Unidata Community Equipment Awards is March 9, 2012.
Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2012, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.
Professors and students from the departments of Computer Science and Earth Sciences at Millersville University are using Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) as the platform for an application to let students explore meteorological data in three dimensions.
The application, known as the Geosciences Probe Of Discovery, or Geopod, uses the IDV's "Flythrough" facility to give the experience of navigating through 3D meteorological data sets as if in an airplane.
For many in the Unidata community -- including Unidata Program Center staff -- the annual American Meteorological Society meeting is a whirlwind event that leaves attendees sorting through new ideas for quite some time after the conference itself has ended. We were gratified that so many community members stopped by Unidata's booth in the exhibit hall to catch up on the latest developments or just talk. But rather than try to touch on everything that happened, here we present some recollections of the meeting from UPC staff members who attended, in no particular order.
The Unidata Users Committee invites you to submit nominations for the Russell L. DeSouza Award for Outstanding Community Service. This Community Service Award honors individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences. Honorees personify Unidata's ideal of a community that shares ideas, data, and software through computing and networking technologies.
On January 10, 2012 the Unidata Policy Committee unanimously approved the following resolution:
Be it resolved that the Polcomm adopts the final version of the Strategic Plan, "Unidata 2020: Geoscience at the Speed of Thought" December 28, 2011.
Unidata's latest strategic plan outlines some of the broad issues faced by community members in their conduct of data-centered Earth System science, and lays out a flexible blueprint for action for the Unidata Program Center staff.
