Do you know someone in the Unidata community who has been actively involved and helpful to you and other Unidata members? Perhaps this is someone who volunteers to assist others, contributes software, or makes suggestions that are generally useful for the community.
The Unidata Users Committee invites you to submit nominations for the Russell L. DeSouza Award for Outstanding Community Service. This Community Service Award honors individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences. Honorees personify Unidata's ideal of a community that shares ideas, data, and software through computing and networking technologies.
Unidata offers equipment grants to support a variety of projects
The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2013 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2013, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.
The Geosciences Probe of Discovery (GEOpod) is an intuitive, interactive application that allows users to navigate through and explore an immersive 3-D environment created from authentic geoscience data. GEOpod is built on top of Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), leveraging its sophisticated features to import and display geoscience data in a teaching environment.
UPDATE: The GEOpod short course will not be held at the Austin AMS meering. The organizers hope to present the course in a different venue in the near future.
GEOpod was created by professors and students from the departments of Computer Science and Earth Sciences at Millersville University. They, along with Unidata Program Center IDV developer Yuan Ho, will be teaching a Short Course — Interactive Immersion Learning: Flying through data onboard the GEOpod — at the upcoming American Meteorological Society annual meeting in Austin, Texas.
The University of Hawaii has installed a new X/L band antenna and satellite downlink that follows satellites that are part of the Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) system. The university installation is intended to capture real time data useful for weather and ocean forecasts as the satellites pass over Hawaii. The project is a collaboration between UH Manoa, the National Weather Service (NWS) Honolulu Forecast Office (HFO), NWS Pacific Region Headquarters, the University of Wisconsin, and Honolulu Community College, where the antenna is installed.
The Unidata Program Center is pleased to welcome six new members to the program's governing committees. Committee members normally serve three-year terms; terms are finishing up for three members of the Users committee and three members of the Policy committee. New members and those finishing their terms will overlap for one meeting, which will take place in mid-September, 2012.
The UPC staff looks forward to working with our new committee members, and to having all the current members of both committees at the Program Center in Boulder, Colorado for the September meeting.
The following provides a brief introduction to the scientists joining Unidata's committees. You can find additional information about the governing committees, including contact information for committee members, on the Governing Committees page.
Richard Ullman of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Science Data Management Branch forwards information on the following two job openings. Applications for these positions will be accepted from Wednesday, August 01, 2012 to Thursday, August 16, 2012.
The 2012 Unidata Users Workshop took place July 9-13 at NCAR's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. The workshop's theme — Navigating Earth System Science Data — encompassed topics that drew speakers and participants from across the atmospheric and other geosciences communities.
Twenty-six presenters from the Unidata community shared their insights on doing science in an environment of expanding data availability with the nearly 100 workshop attendees. The talks ranged from high-level descriptions of big initiatives like the National Science Foundation's Earth Cube, Global modeling at NOAA, and the joint NOAA-NASA GOES-R satellite program to hands-on demonstrations of data analysis tools including python, GrADS, Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer, and the still-in-development AWIPS-II system.
This afternoon the Unidata Program Center received a message from Dr. Perry Samson of the University of Michigan. Dr. Samson is a co-founder of The Weather Underground, and he wrote to inform the Unidata community about the sale of the Weather Underground to The Weather Channel.
