On Friday, March 28, 2014 the Unidata Program Center (UPC) updated the demonstration THREDDS Data Server (TDS) running on thredds.ucar.edu to version 4.5 of the TDS software. After encountering some issues with the updated version, including problems with community members' IDV bundles not loading as expected from thredds.ucar.edu, UPC staff reverted the demonstration server to version 4.3 on April 1st.
UPC staff had became aware that TDS version 4.3 running on thredds.ucar.edu was not keeping some dataset indices up to date automatically. This situation required manual intervention by UPC staff to keep the indices updated, which, coupled with changes in UPC security procedures following the intrusion on February 20, 2014, increased the urgency of releasing a new TDS version that fixed the problem. After internal testing convinced us that TDS version 4.5 was functioning properly, we followed the normal procedure of updating UPC servers (specifically thredds.ucar.edu) before releasing the package to other sites. This staged release process normally allows us to find and fix "real world" issues that are not caught by internal testing.
The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), a Research Unit of Columbia University located on the Lamont Campus in Palisades, NY, is seeking a full-time programmer to participate in the development of web and mobile applications for a range of exciting and globally important projects. CIESIN is an organization that seeks to bridge social and natural science research with immediately relevant applied policy work, and specializes in on-line data and information management. Unidata offers equipment grants to support a variety of projects
The deadline for 2014 Unidata Community Equipment Award proposals is March 14, 2014.
Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata Community Equipment Awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2014, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.
The School of Meteorology of University of Oklahoma has an opening for a post-doctoral research associate/research scientist to study the impact of outflow on hurricane intensification through ensemble-based data assimilation and ensemble simulations. This work will be performed at University of Oklahoma in collaboration with scientists in Naval Research Laboratory at Monterey.
The University of Miami is pleased to sponsor and host a Unidata Regional Workshop on Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, 2014. Unidata Program Center staff will provide introductory and advanced training in the use of Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), Repository for Archiving, Managing and Accessing Diverse Data (RAMADDA), and other Unidata data and tools.
The 2014 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers will be held from April 8 to April 12, 2014 in Tampa, Florida. The meeting brings together geographers, GIS specialists, weather and climate scientists, and other leaders for the latest in research and applications in geography, sustainability, and GIScience. The meeting will feature over 4,500 presentations, posters, workshops, and field trips by leading scholars, experts, and researchers.
Ryan May joined the Unidata Program Center software development staff on January 6th, 2013. He comes to Unidata from the University of Oklahoma, where he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in Meteorology, and where he'll be finishing up his doctoral dissertation "sometime later this year."
The first World Weather Open Science Conference (WWOSC 2014 — The weather: what's the outlook?) will be held in Montréal, Canada, from 16-21 August 2014. The conference hopes "to bring together the entire weather science and user communities for the first time to review the state-of-the-art and map out the scientific frontiers for the next decade and more."
