The Unidata Program Center's two summer student interns — Linfeng Li from the University of Michigan and Jaye Norman from North Carolina State University, Raleigh — have come to the end of their summer appointments. After a summer of dedicated work they presented the results of their projects to the UPC staff on July 23, 2025.
Jaye Norman joined the NSF Unidata Program Center as a student summer intern on May 19, 2025. This fall, Jaye will be a Senior at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. After finishing their Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Jaye plans to attend graduate school for a Master's degree in Meteorology with a focus on numerical modeling.
Linfeng Li joined the NSF Unidata Program Center as a student summer intern on May 19, 2025. Linfeng is a PhD student in Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan, where his research focus is in Planetary Sciences. “I am modeling the atmospheric dynamics of ice giants and lava planets, studying the potential intrinsic asymmetry of planetary atmosphere,” he says. “I've always been excited to learn how diverse and distinct the planetary environments are.”
The Rising Voices, Changing Coasts (RVCC) Hub is a coastal research project that brings together university-trained scientists and Indigenous knowledge-holders to study the interactions between natural, human-built, and social systems in coastal populated environments. Applications for the RVCC Summer Internship program are now being accepted. Priority will be given to those who apply before February 16, 2025.
Do you use NSF Unidata software packages? Do you love to write code or teach others about data-centered Earth System Science? Maybe you're just interested in the interplay of science and data? The NSF Unidata Summer Internship program is looking for you!
The NSF Unidata Summer Internship offers undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to work with NSF Unidata Program Center staff on projects drawn from a wide variety of areas in the atmospheric and computational sciences. Apply for the 2025 internship by 24 January 2025.
The Unidata Program Center's two summer student interns — Ana Castaneda Montoya from the University of Michigan and Leo Matak from the University of Houston — have come to the end of their summer appointments. After a summer of dedicated work they presented the results of their projects to the UPC staff on July 31, 2024.
As part of my summer of 2024 internship I had the privilege of getting involved with some of NSF Unidata's Python projects. My work ranged from creating educational tutorials to adding new functionalities to existing libraries, enhancing the resources available to the community.
I would like to begin by saying that this internship has definitely been one of the top highlights of my Ph.D. journey. I spent most of my working hours implementing the idea of server-side virtual data processing. This means that data on the THREDDS Data Servers (TDS) could be virtually processed without actually modifying the data. As such, the data integrity would remain intact, but it could be optimized for ML/AI.
