Spend the summer in beautiful Boulder, Colorado (maybe...)
Do you use Unidata software packages? Do you love to write code? The Unidata Summer Internship program is looking for you!
The Unidata Summer Internship offers undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to work with Unidata software engineers and scientists on projects drawn from a wide variety of areas in the atmospheric and computational sciences. Unidata's mission is to support the Earth Science research and education community with data and tools for data access, analysis, and visualization. As a Unidata intern, you'll pursue the goal of adding innovative enhancements to data access, analysis, and visualization tools developed within Unidata.
Unidata is looking for graduate and undergraduate students in the geosciences to share their views on remote learning environments. The Unidata Users Committee and Unidata Program Center staff want to hear about your experiences, needs, and wishes for remote learning during a special online discussion session.
The panel discussion will be held be from 1:00 to 1:55 PM MST on November 13, 2020. We're hoping to have roughly six students representing a variety of atmospheric science and related programs share their thoughts about what works well in remote learning situations, what doesn't work, and what might be done to improve the experience. Each student will have a short opportunity (3-4 minutes) to share their experience, followed by a dialogue with the Users Committee. A synthesis of the discussion will be shared with the Unidata community to communicate lessons learned.
The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is an open networked community that brings together science, data and information technology practitioners around Earth science issues. The ESIP Community Fellowship program offers students a chance to work closely with professionals in an interdisciplinary, cross-sector group (ESIP collaboration area) on current Earth Science problems. The application deadline for the 2020-21 fellowship is October 9, 2020.
The Raskin Scholarship is open to graduate students, post-docs, and early career (less than five years post graduation) scientists in Earth science, computer science, or a closely related discipline. Preference is given to applicants who can demonstrate a connection to ESIP-related activities. The scholarship seeks to promote collaboration, research support, and exposure for talented students and early career researchers in the Earth or computer sciences. The Scholarship, which is awarded annually, provides a $5000 award and travel support to the ESIP Summer Meeting, where the recipient will have an invited talk covering their field of interest.

During the Fall semester of 2018, Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) piloted a small seminar course in scientific computing intended for junior and senior undergraduates majoring in math, physics, engineering, or computer science. The goal was to develop and test a multi-disciplinary course, which would ultimately be added as an upper-level elective in these programs. Because NDMU is a small, primarily undergraduate, teaching university with limited computational resources, we reached out to Unidata to ask if we could test our new course using JupyterHub resources that are part of the Unidata Science Gateway. Having never offered this course before, we were uncertain the extent of the resources needed and the commitment needed to maintain and tweak those resources as the course progressed. Partnering with Unidata offered us a way to gain this expertise while getting access to the resources we needed for the class.
The Unidata Users Committee is seeking nominations for a Graduate Student representative to join the group of nine university faculty members currently serving on this committee. Nominees should be Graduate Students who use Unidata software, hold a strong interest in the Unidata program, and have an interest in learning how a community-based program like Unidata is governed. Nominations may be made by any community member, and self-nominations are acceptable. This position will be for a two-year term beginning with the fall 2019 Users Committee meeting.
The Raskin Scholarship is open to graduate students, post-docs, and early career (5-years post degree) scientists in the Earth or computer sciences who have an interest in community evolution of Earth science data systems. The Raskin Scholarship seeks to promote collaboration, research support, and exposure for talented students in the Earth or computer sciences. Special attention will be given to applicants demonstrating an interest in semantics, GIS, cyberinfrastructure and computing in the geosciences. The Scholarship will provide a $5000 award and travel support to the ESIP Summer Meeting, where the scholarship recipient will have an invited talk covering their field of interest.
