The 2012 Unidata Users Workshop took place July 9-13 at NCAR's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. The workshop's theme — Navigating Earth System Science Data — encompassed topics that drew speakers and participants from across the atmospheric and other geosciences communities.
Twenty-six presenters from the Unidata community shared their insights on doing science in an environment of expanding data availability with the nearly 100 workshop attendees. The talks ranged from high-level descriptions of big initiatives like the National Science Foundation's Earth Cube, Global modeling at NOAA, and the joint NOAA-NASA GOES-R satellite program to hands-on demonstrations of data analysis tools including python, GrADS, Unidata's Integrated Data Viewer, and the still-in-development AWIPS-II system.
The American Meteorological Society's Board on Data Stewardship will be organizing sessions on topics related to Data Stewardship at the 93rd AMS Annual Meeting, which will take place 6-10 January 2013 in Austin, TX.
The Unidata netCDF group is pleased to announce the 4.2.1 release of the netCDF C libraries:
This release contains two important new features as well as performance enhancements, bug fixes, and documentation improvements. It is designed to be compatible with existing netCDF data and software.
The Unidata Program Center has spiffy new lodgings. Again!
After nearly a year of renovation and refurbishment, UCAR's Foothills Laboratory 4 is ready for occupancy. The Unidata Program Center is moving back to its (newly remodelled) space in the FL-4 building July 5-6, 2012. As a result, we may be slow to respond to phone calls and e-mail support questions during the transition. If all goes according to plan, we'll be in the new space beginning on Monday, July 9th. (Note, however, that most UPC staff will be attending the 2012 Unidata Users Workshop at NCAR's Mesa Lab the week of July 9th.)
This afternoon the Unidata Program Center received a message from Dr. Perry Samson of the University of Michigan. Dr. Samson is a co-founder of The Weather Underground, and he wrote to inform the Unidata community about the sale of the Weather Underground to The Weather Channel.
