John,

>I am interested in acquiring surface, upper air and satellite data for
>Oct 21 1996. I'm currently using GEMPAK to look at RUC output for this
>case, but would like to extend our research with additional data.
>Steve Silberberg at Northern Illinois Univ. said that you would be able
>to contact the folks at SSEC in Madison, who then could provide this
>information. Is this correct? If so, please let me know what
>information I can provide to expedite this.

An archive of the data products broadcast in the Unidata-Wisconsin
datastream is maintained at SSEC. The archived products are in McIDAS
format, so, other than imagery, they will be of little use in GEMPAK.
If you are interested in the products that are in the archive for
use in McIDAS, then you should be able to get the data that you need
(the archive is not complete; there are gaps here and there for a
variety of reasons).

The procedure for getting access to the data that you are looking for
is outlined in:

Unidata WWW Homepage:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu
  Access to Archived Data
  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/recovery.html
    Unidata-Wisconsin Archive
    http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/unirec.html

Basically all you will need to do is identify the day(s) you are interested
in and send an email to the systems operator (address@hidden)
requesting that the data be loaded onto disk from tape.

>Thanks,

If SSEC does not have the data you are looking for, an alternative is to
send an email to our "Need Data" email list (address@hidden)
and ask if someone out there in the Unidata community has the data you
are looking for. To send email to needdata, you must first subscribe
to needdata. You can do this online at:

Unidata WWW Homepage:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu
  News, Publications, and Discussions
  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/publications/index.html
    Mailing Lists
    http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/mailing-list-form.html

If you decide to take this route, please include the format of the data
that you are looking for (e.g. GEMPAK grids, etc.).
