I think the lack of response was from the url used, ie

http://motherlode.ucar.edu:9080/thredds/catalog.html 

The 9080 is only for internal development, not exposed to the public.

Try the 8080 url:

http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/catalog.html
