[LDM #WAD-467112]: LDM hardware recommendation

Hi Todd,

I apologize for not being able to respond to your inquiry before now!

Unfortunately, the latest two versions of MacOS-X have bugs that cause
problems for the LDM. We have submitted bug reports to Apple through
one of our sites (U. Oklahoma) who is officially recognized as an
Apple development site, but so far there has been no action to fix
the bug. We are confident that it is a bug in the operating system
since previous versions of MacOS-X ran fine, and there has been no
change in the LDM that would cause the problem being seen.

Because of the MacOS-X bug, we can not recommend Macs for LDM use.
Since most of the Unidata community has migrated to use of Linux,
we recommend that you strongly consider doing the same. If you follow
our hardware recommendations, we would suggest using some variant of
RedHat Linux: RedHat Enterprise, Fedora, CentOS. Virtually all other
Linux distributions are in active use in the Unidata community, but
several use 'syslog-ng' for system logging, and the LDM relies on use
of 'syslogd'. Debian and Ubuntu (which is a Debian derivative) are
the two most prevalent that come to mind with regards to the use of
'syslog-ng' for system logging.

The other platform we like is Sun Solaris in either i386 or SPARC
configurations.

No worries. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help
with.

Cheers,

Tom
