[McIDAS #YPS-212209]: McIDAS-X for Windows 7 v2018.2 distribution

Hmm... Perhaps they figured that you were set on using McIDAS-X, and, if you
didn't mention wanting to run under Windows 10, they might have also assumed
that your target platform was a *nix machine.

The IDV and McIDAS-V (McIDAS-V is an extension of the IDV) are very capable 
packages.
I use all three packages routinely (McIDAS-X under Linux, IDV and McIDAS-V under
Winows 10), and they all have their strong points.  I would say that satellite
meteorologists are the most likely to use McIDAS-X under Linux, and others are
more likely to use either McIDAS-V or the IDV.

Excellent!

Comment: it may be the case that McIDAS-V will be more useful to you if your
primary use is satellite data as SSEC has built in a number of the ADDE servers
into McIDAS-V that have not (yet) been built into the IDV.
