The reason that I was unable to do this is the directory is owned by 'root', and the write permissions have not been set for 'mcidas' (or others) to be able to update it: cyclone% ls -alt /var/data total 8 drwxrwxr-x 36 root sys 1024 Apr 3 15:45 .. drwxrwxr-x 2 root other 512 Apr 1 14:10 mcidas drwxrwxr-x 4 root other 512 Mar 18 15:36 . drwxrwxr-x 2 root other 512 Mar 18 15:36 xcd So, you or someone else with 'root' access on cyclone should: o change the ownership of /var/data/mcidas and /var/data/xcd to 'mcidas' (make sure you change the group to that of 'mcidas' also!) o delete the copy of SYSKEY.TAB in /var/data/mcidas o as 'mcidas': - copy ~mcidas/data/SYSKEY.TAB to /var/data/mcidas - copy ~mcidas/workdata/ROUTE.SYS to /var/data/mcidas That should get rid of the errors you/the student were seeing with McIDAS startup. Tom
