I believe the I/O problem in 2.6.10- was specific to 2.6 kernels and
not really related to the poorer overall performance in 2.4 kernels.
NFS was a big problem for us under 2.4, but improved greatly after
forcing proto=tcp mount option which seemed to resolve several issues.

In either case, an upgrade to 2.6.11+ should be a big win...
