While it is possible to install the LDM under an account named
something other than 'ldm', it is non-standard.  Since we are setting
up a brand new machine, I strongly suggest that we do things in as
standard a manner as possible so that the explanations on our web pages
exactly match your setup.  This will make support of the software by
people at your site easier than if things are slightly non-standard.

The first step in becoming more standardized is to create a user
account named 'ldm', and have its home directory /home/ldm.

After creating the LDM account, I will logon and install the LDM up to
the point where 'root' has to step in and do the finishing steps (which
I will detail in an email).

Once the LDM is fully setup, I propose that we configure the LDM to
ingest data in increasing amounts so that we can determine how large
your network bandwidth is.

I do as well.  I was able to logon to your machine with no problems and
run some simple, preliminary tests that show that the connectivity to
your machine is decent.  What I have not determined yet is how large
the network "pipe" is to your machine.

You are very welcome.

Here are the questions and comments that came to mind after logging on
to your machine and looking around:

1) we notice that the ethernet connection is setup for 10 Mbps
   with half duplex.  We suggest that it be configured for
   full duplex.  Will your network handle 100 Mbps?

2) we would like to install the LDM as the user 'ldm' in /home/ldm
   (reasons are listed above)

3) we notice that there is no DNS for your machine.  The LDM wants
   there to be both forward and reverse name lookup support for
   machines that participate in the IDD.  This means that the the following
   must be supported:

nslookup 210.245.4.131            <- gives host <name>
nslookup <name>                   <- gives back same IP

4) exactly what data do yo uwant to ingest once the LDM is up and
   running?  Do you want to run Unidata's NAWIPS distribution for
   display and analysis of the data ingested by the LDM?

I am sure that there will be additional questions as time goes on, but
that is enough for right now.
