Yuck!!  ugly...  

On occasion I've had problems with debug mode, but usually in form of
crashes.  I have hypothesized that it's a string buffer overflow because
when it occured the symptom was a segmentation violation.  This sounds
different.

I could try to duplicate this on our Alpha...

I tried a different Alpha - sometimes is occurs, sometimes it does not.
