Well, then I guess I fixed it. ;-)
In general, the VisAD Gridded*Set code is not thread safe and you should use
the latest visad.jar or the 2.7u1 local-visad.jar in your distribution. I ran
into the problem when sharing probe positions, so it's not limited to the spiky
isosurface issue.
