Jessica,
If you're a bit confused with the last response it was 
from our Java netcdf staff and was directed towards me. 
It describes using an ncml wrapper to define the required attributes.

I have put together a plugin, "SSEC Lightning Data", that can be loaded from
the Data Sources category of the Plugin Manager  in the IDV. This defines a new
data type "SSEC Lightning Data", that automatically makes use of the above ncml
and enables one to load this file as a point data source.

Your user should try binning the times in the properties of the data source and 
then
not show an accumulation in the time animation (which is causing the delay at 
every 
time step).
