Subject: Satellite Data Archive at SSEC/UW

User's Committee Colleagues:

At the last Unidata Policy Committee meeting, Dr. Robert Fox of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison requested reaction from UserCom members
on making satellite imagery archived at SSEC on 3590 media freely available
to Unidata member universities for research and education purposes. The
turn-around time for access of the data would be on the order of a few
days. If reaction is positive, then approval must be obtained from NCDC
before any data can be distributed. This would expand the available data
to include the highest resolution imagery from all channels, including
data not currently available to the user community, such as all 19 channels
from the GOES East and West sounders.

Do you, as a representative of the Unidata user community feel that this
would be a valuable resource for participating member institutions? Please
feel free to provide some specific or detailed responses (more than just,
"sure, sounds great") since we will be passing this information along to
the Policy Committee.

Just as a reminder, I would like you all to note that presently requests for
archived satellite imagery are processed through NCDC for a fee, regardless of
the usage (ie., educational or research applications do not get a break).
The only satellite archive currently "freely" available to our user community
is the Unidata-Wisconsin data stream archive, also at SSEC, which begins
in 1991, and includes the data which have been sent in the Unidata-Wisconsin
broadcast (ie., the visible, water vapor and thermal IR channels at the
reduced resolutions).

Please provide us with your feedback by Wednesday, September 8th. This issue
will be discussed at the next Policy Committee meeting, at NSF on September
13-14.

Thanks for you time in addressing this important issue.
