One of our system administrators will look into this tomorrow.
Since you need fairly recent images, you may be able to get what you
want from the neartime datasets on idd.ssec.wisc.edu:
http://idd.ssec.wisc.edu
Decoded data archives
http://idd.ssec.wisc.edu/decoded/
gempak -> areas
http://idd.ssec.wisc.edu/decoded/gempak/areas/
etc.
The difference between the images in the password controlled area and the
ones accessible by walking the directory tree above are:
- the length of the "archive" is much shorter for the latter set
- the images in the latter set are still in PNGA-compressed format while
the ones in the former set are simple McIDAS AREA files
Images sent in the Unidata IDD are either in zlib-compressed GINI format
or PNGA-compressed AREA format. All display/visualization packages available
GEMPAK, the IDV and McIDAS-X, understand images in the compressed formats
used in LDM/IDD distribution, so it is likely that you will be able to
use the PNGA-compressed images directly in your application (presumably
still GEMPAK). If not (i.e., if you are trying to use the images in
some other display/analysis package), you will need to uncompress the
images using an appropriate ldm-mcidas decoder: pnga2area for PNGA-compressed
images and zlibg2gini for zlib-compressed images.
We apologize for the problems getting to the Unidata-Wisconsin archives on
idd.unidata.ucar.edu!
Cheers,
Tom
