Hi Brian,
>Not sure if there is any progress yet regarding decoding of GRIB2 data into
>McIDAS-XCD, but this may be an opportunity to at least grab some data for
>testing purposes in the future?
We are already getting the 12 km ETA model data in GRIB2 format through
our locally-developed DVB-S NOAAPORT ingest system. I havn't started
the task of upgrading McIDAS-XCD v2004 to decode this data, but it has
crossed my mind. I delayed work mostly because I am overwhelmed right
now, and also because I was told that Scott Lindstrom of SSEC was
working on a GRIB ADDE server that would make decoding of GRIB data
unnecessary. By logical extension :-), I assumed that the resulting
server could be extended to support access to the GRIB2 data.
>Although the notice below says that the data are coming through the AWIPS
>SBN, there is also a sentence near the end that says that non-AWIPS
>customers can contact Data Management ( address@hidden
><mailto:address@hidden> ) if they want to get these data added to your
>datastream. Personally, I've never received any response when sending a
>note to address@hidden <mailto:address@hidden> , so perhaps you can
>contact Richard Robinson directly?
We don't need to go in this direction since we are already getting
GRIB2 formatted data through our DVB-S NOAAPORT ingest and through
the IDD CONDUIT stream that we provide for our community. In case
you don't know what CONDUIT is, it is the high resolution model data
that most folks FTP off of Weather Service FTP sites. We setup
an experiment under the auspices of the USWRP to relay the same data
through our IDD several years ago. This relay became so successful
that the CONDUIT stream is no longer considered an experiment in
high volume data movement. More and more universities are relying
on it to get the data they use to initialize their local models.
Thanks for thinking of us!
Cheers,
Tom
