realtime global satellite image collaborations

I'm pleased to announce the availability at SSEC of real-time satellite
image collaborations available for you to use any time with on-line GOES,
GMS, Meteosat, and Derived Product images. We've also added the latest
national radar composite to the GOES-E and -W collaborations.

All you need is a Java-enabled web browser and a phone (or a
voice-over-the-net connection - we've used the 'voice chat' on Yahoo!
Messenger quite successfully internationally for this) and you can share &
discuss the latest imagery with your colleagues!

If any of you have projects where you'd like to set up something similar,
drop us a note -- as long as you have the images, it's pretty easy!

These satellite image collaborations were set up for the VISIT Project,
using the VISITview Teletraining and Collaboration software we have
written for the NWS (http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/visitview), and are
served from the SSEC main web server, using the images that are already
available on-line. The collaborations are available to anyone who wants
to use them!

The top-level access page is:

     http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/visit/satcollab.html

and there is a link off the SSEC Images and Data page as well. Note there
is also a link on this page to a GOES Derived Products collaboration as
well.

To use these collaborations:

1) Link to the page named above and read the instructions!!

2) Select which set of data (satellite) you want to use.

3) After the applet starts up, a window will appear that will list any
active collaborations. You may join one by double-clicking; you may
create a new one by typing in a simple, unique name (the dataset name
will automatically be appended to what you type) -- in which case,
you'll want to phone your fellow collaborator(s) and let them know which
group you created.

[Note: groups are removed from the server when no one is left in them.
Also, the server will disconnect any participant who has not been active
for more than one hour.]

4) The VISITview controls are toward the bottom of the window - usually
you will click "Next" or select a page and then click "Selected".

5) Please read over the info on controls at the bottom of the image
display.

6) Although these are real-time data, there is no attempt to refresh or
automatically update the images in the pages.

7) Please NOTE: there are two sets of image files for most of the data
sets: the first ones listed are JPEGs that are of lower quality but
much, much smaller. The ones labelled "Hi-Q" are GIFs that are much,
much larger! Since all images are served over the web, this might be a
consideration.

If you have any questions or comments, please send a note to:
