20011220: access to SATEPS GMS/METEOSAT/INSAT server; Unisys NIDS

Brian,

>It looks like everything has been straightened out according to Tom
>Renkevens. You should be gaining access to the real-time datasets
>(MET, IND, INS, GMS) on gsp3.wwb.noaa.gov.

Wonderful!

>I asked this afternoon for
>the addition. The GMS is unrestricted. The others have redistribution
>restrictions as outlined in Tom R's emails to you.

I understand and will abide by the restrictions.

>Susan is out until
>next year, but Russ Lancaster can add your address if you want to start
>checking things out.

OK. For the record, the information for the two machines is:

128.117.140.56 zero.unidata.ucar.edu
128.117.13.119 motherlode.ucar.edu

>I'm sorry this took so long. It really shouldn't
>have been this way, except we were working from an outdated copy of the
>agreement and had to get (1) an updated agreement, and (2) make certain
>we understood the restrictions in the current agreement.

Absolutely no problem. I am glad to be getting the access!

>I also have an unrelated question for you about radar data availability
>in McIDAS. We currently access data from Kansas City (AWC) at ADDE
>group GPA - radar reflectivity products. These are in McIDAS format,
>but the workstation will soon be decommissioned.

Are these NEXRAD Level III products (aka NIDS), or are you talking
about the various composites that Unisys produced?

>We asked for the code
>from AWC, and they sent us only the display-side code, not the actual
>converter/decoder from ?Unisys? or ?NIDS? format.

If we are talking about NIDS products, then my ADDE server will work
with them (but may need a long delayed addition that reads a site
id number from the file and translates it into a station name). If
we are talking about the composites, then my WSI Nowrad (tm) server
could be pretty easily cloned and modified to serve up the data.

>Unidata was
>mentioned as having that decoder, or perhaps it is imbedded in GEMPAK.

GEMPAK is setup to display the Unisys radar images, both NIDS and
composites.

>Do you happen to have any code that could help us convert from the
>radar data available on N-AWIPS to McIDAS AREA format?

If you gave me access to several examples of the files you are
desiring to serve/convert, I can let you know if you should already
be able to look at the data, or if some work needs to be done to
create a new server.

>Thanks,

Thank you for the help getting access to the server hosting the
GMS/METEOSAT/INSAT data!

Tom
