Re: 20010409: St. Louis U. needs documentation of IDD for Internet II proposal

Hi Chuck,

As a cooperating participant in the Unidata Program (managed by the University Corporation Foundation), St Louis University could benefit from Internet2 connectivity.

Along with the CRAFT project consideration, you might also be interested in the high resolution model data available from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Although there are model data sets available via NOAAPORT, there are higher resolution data sets available via CONDUIT (Collaborative Opportunity for NCEP Data Using IDD Technology), see:

 http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/exp.models.html

CONDUIT is in the process of a transition to Internet2/Abilene at the NWS and is available through subscribing to the particular conduit data sets via the Internet Data Distribution (IDD).

The IDD is currently growing with the distribution of NEXRAD data that was not generally available during the previous NIDS contract with the NWS. Now that data is becoming available through NOAAPORT and that particular type of data will be doubling during April (this month). See:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/oso/noaaport.html

In fact, let me provide a clip from a note received lst week, April 4, 2001.

------------------------------------------
On Wednesday, 4/4, the Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 1.45/1.5 deg elev
(N1Rxxx) radar product was added to the SBN/NOAAPORT.

The plan is to add 1 radar product per weekday. As each radar product is
added to the SBN/NOAAPORT, NWS Headquarters will monitor the performance
impact on the receiving AWIPS systems. The ds1 and as1 servers are the
systems that may be most impacted by these additional radar products.
While NWS Headquarters is monitoring the performance impact, the
additional radar products will only be transmitted on the SBN/NOAAPORT
from approximately 9 a.m. EDT to 5 p.m. EDT.

The schedule for adding the 10 radar products to NOAAPORT is as follows:

Date Radar Product
4/4 Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 1.45/1.5 deg elev
(N1Rxxx)
4/5 Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 2.4/2.5 deg elev
(N2Rxxx)
4/6 Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 3.35/3.5 deg elev
(N3Rxxx)
4/9 Reflectivity (R), Product 20 @ 0.5 deg elev
(N0Zxxx)
4/10 Velocity (V), Product 27 @ 1.45/1.5 deg elev
(N1Vxxx)
4/11 Echo Tops (ET), Product 41
(NETxxx)
4/12 Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) Wind Profile, Product 48
(VWDxxx)
4/13 Storm Rel Mean Rad Vel (SRM), Product 56 @ 1.45 deg elev
(N1Sxxx)
4/16 Storm Rel Mean Rad Vel (SRM), Product 56 @ 2.4 deg elev
(N2Sxxx)
4/17 One Hour Precipitation (OHP), Product 78
(N1Pxxx)

Beginning on Wednesday, April 4th, the NCF will begin sending
additional radar products over the SBN. Currently, there are eight
products being distributed via the SBN. The following additional ten
products will be added:

Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 1.45/1.5 deg
elev (N1Rxxx)
Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 2.4/2.5 deg
elev (N2Rxxx)
Reflectivity (R), Product 19 @ 3.35/3.5 deg
elev (N3Rxxx)
Reflectivity (R), Product 20 @ 0.5 deg
elev (N0Zxxx)
Velocity (V), Product 27 @ 1.45/1.5 deg
elev (N1Vxxx)
Echo Tops (ET), Product
41 (NETxxx)

Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) Wind Profile, Product 48
(VWDxxx)
Storm Rel Mean Rad Vel (SRM), Product 56 @ 1.45 deg elev
(N1Sxxx)
Storm Rel Mean Rad Vel (SRM), Product 56 @ 2.4 deg elev
(N2Sxxx)
One Hour Precipitation (OHP), Product
78 (N1Pxxx)

The new products will be phased in over time to minimize the potential
for performance problems. On the morning of April 4th, the SST will
distribute a revised version of prodList.txt to all sites which will
identify the first of the ten products listed above (Reflectivity
Product @ 1.45/1.5 deg elev) for SBN distribution. RadarStorage will
then be stopped and restarted to activate the new file. That evening,
the SST will restore the "baseline" of version of prodList.txt.

The next morning, the SST will again distribute a revised version of
prodList.txt, this time with the first two products listed above set
up for SBN distribution, and will replace the baseline again at
night. Each weekday, one additional new product will be added to
prodList.txt so, assuming there are no problems, the entire set of new
products will have been added by the morning of April 17th.

During this phase-in period, we will be monitoring field sites to make
sure the addition of these new products does not result in system
performance degradation. If we determine that there is an impact,
then the addition of new products will be suspended until the problem
can be rectified. We highly recommend that all sites closely monitor
their system performance during this period and report any impacts to
the NCF. The additional products will result in increased processing
activity on both the as1 and ds1 servers, so you may see the CPU
utilization increase. The notification server on as1 will also be
affected and you may start to see an impact on the updating of green
times. If there are going to be performance impacts, the sites which
receive data from a large number of radars will be the first to be
affected so National Centers and RFCs in particular should be aware of
how their systems are performing.

We will continue to post updates to the awipsinfo list as the phase-in
goes along to keep you all advised on how it is progressing.

Saint Louis University, along with other local universities are looking to
obtaining Internet II access. My part in this effort is to document
meritorious applications requiring Internet II speeds for meteorology.
Could you provide me with some documentation on IDD and the "need" to
go to Internet II? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks Again
Chuck

(PS we are planning to include the CRAFT project....are there any others
we might consider?)
