Jason,

I saw Jim Koermer's reply to you on this one earlier, but I wanted to
touch base with you directly on the conversion of GINI imagery to
McIDAS AREA form.

>We've got a new NOAAPort system here at OU, and soon I'll be able to

I guess the question I have about the conversion is why you are looking
to do it in the first place. It strikes me that this may be for a
package other than the Unidata McIDAS or GEMPAK distributions since
both of these support display of imagery in GINI form directly.

Another site, NCAR/RAP, needed to do the conversion in support of one
of their applications. After discussing options with them, they chose
to install Unidata McIDAS and use its ADDE GINI input and AREA output
capabilities to do their conversions. Perhaps the same setup would
benefit you? I do not provide is a standalone routine that will do the
conversions, so the ADDE read from one dataset form and write to
another (AREA in this case) is the most I can offer.

>or help!

On another yet related topic, I contact all sites that install NOAAPORT
ingest systems to see if they would be willing to provide access to
their GINI data through remote ADDE services. So far, Unidata/NCAR,
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Georgia, Plymouth State
College, and CU/CIRES have agreed to host such services. Access at the
University of Oklahoma would help provide regional access to the high
resolution imagery available in NOAAPORT, so I am hopeful that you (OU)
would be willing to participate. One benefit from doing this would be
that I could setup the ADDE server on a host of your choice and you
would then have the GINI to AREA conversion facility you asked about
above.

I look forward to discussing this possibility with you or other OU
representatives in the near future.
