Re: Access-Distribution to GEM data (fwd) (fwd)

Hi Richard and Gerard,

I wanted to follow up with you regarding the last exchange with Ekaterina, before her maternity leave. I've appended several email exchanges below.

Unidata would be very happy to provide a newsletter article in our next edition (to be published very soon) about the GEM data being available from CMC to the university community. Richard, if you have particular things you'd like to cover, we could co-author the article. Things to be covered are:

--A description of the data would be helpful, along with any updated Web URLs. I have some, but you might want to provide the latest information you have available.
--How/who the community members contact for accessing the data
--The fact that the data is available using the LDM
--Any restrictions on use or redistribution needs to be covered

Unidata could send a notice to our "community" email list too. The list is very comprehensive, including several hundred names of people interested in Unidata activities. Perhaps you have other methods you'd rather employ to notify future users of the data sets. You might have universities already identified that you would rather start with and move gradually to see how it evolves. Unidata could certainly provide a handful of sites who would be interested in the early stages, if you prefer the slower evolution.

Let me know what your preferences are, Richard. I'll look forward to hearing from you soon so we can incorporate the information into the newsletter article.

In the meantime, if there are technical issues still outstanding, please do not hesitate to contact Unidata support at:

Thanks!

Linda

Yes, the GEM data is flowing again, UPC is receiving it on our LDM server
and we are decoding it. The feedtype GEM has been added to an internal LDM
release that will be released this summer. At this time I can't give a
definite release date. But, CMC can distribute the data now by entering
an "allow" statement in your ldmd.conf file for each site you want to
feed and the downstream sites need to enter the following in their
ldmd.conf file.

# get the Canadian GEM model data
request EXP "CMC_GEM_reg_.*" ftp.cmc.ec.gc.ca
#

That's it for the configurations of the ldm's. If you have an questions
feel free to ask.

Hello Linda,

Our apologies for not contacting you sooner. In our last exchanges with
Robb in early February, he confirmed that he was getting the CMC GRIB
products and decoding them OK. Since then we have been feeding our GRIB
data on a daily basis into the LDM queue on our external server.
Unfortunately, we have not followed up closely as we should have. The
logs now seem to show that the new products are not being ingested
correctly. I will follow up on this with Robb.

Once this technical issue is cleared up, we would appreciate your help in
advertising the availability of the GEM model ouputs. From our side we
will contact a few universities to let them know that things are now
working in order to get the ball going. In his note in February, Robb
mentionned the possibility to include a "GEM feedtype" in the new version
of LDM. Can we have more information on this possibility ?

On a different note, I am going on a maternity leave at the end of this
week and will be away until the end of the year. Gerard Croteau (e-mail:
address@hidden; tel (514) 421-4618) will take care of the
Unidata file in my absence.

Richard is at your service to help you out in the process of advertising
the GEM model output availability.

Thank you again for your interest in this project !

With best regards,
Ekaterina

Is CMC still running the LDM? It's my understanding that the data were no
longer sent to Unidata's server sometime during February.

Is CMC still interested in getting the data out to interested university
sites? > If so, it would seem that the hard work is already done, and the rest

Can you let us know what is happening?

Thanks very much!

Hi Richard and Ekaterina,

Congratulations on getting the LDM working in Canada at the CMC!

I believe in earlier communications with you, Richard, we were unsure of the
number of sites who might be requesting the data. The allow command enables
the source site (you, in this case) to monitor who is getting the data. If
