16.10 Introduction to Compound Types
Use compound types to bundle one or more named values, possible of different
types, together into a single named unit.
Potential uses for compound types
- Representing vector quantities like wind
- Bundling multiple in situ observations together (profiles, soundings)
- Modeling relational database tuples
- Representing C structures or Fortran-90 derived types portably
- Accessing a group of related values as a unit instead of separately
