20030826: SuSE Linux ? (cont.)

Tony,

>Thanks Tom,

No worries.

>Any plans for LDM 6.0 binaries?

Not at the moment.

>Could I install the 5.1.2 binaries and then
>have you do a remote upgrade to 6.0 as you did last spring?

There is no reason to install the 5.1.2 binaries if you are immediately
going to upgrade to 6.x. Why not just build the latest LDM-6 release
straight off?

>Kurt and I were thinking of taking one of my new workstations, that's sitting

This is a good idea. Just remember that even if the current binary
releases of software packages work under a different flavor of Linux,
there is no guarantee that they will continue to work after you do
things like install OS patches, GCC upgrades, etc. It would probably
be better to build any package you want to use from source. That
way, you will be assured that needed entry points are found in
shared libraries that you have on your system.

>I was planning to use wxbox to feed
>it the same datastream. I've never passed data downstream to anyone so I'd
>have to read up on how to do it.

This is simple. First, your new machine should support forward and
reverse name lookup (this is done by a DNS server, not the new box).
Next, simply add an allow line in your ~ldm/etc/ldmd.conf file for the
new box. For example:

allow	ANY	newwxbox.mscd.edu

>Is this the best way to set up a test LDM,

Yes.

>and I assume Unidata would have to approve any new downstream machine since
>it would be part of the IDD?

No, you can feed machines as you see fit.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom, Kurt and will follow your advice and set up a test machine by
building our own from source. I'll let you know how we make out.
