Howdy Corey!
As Larry points out, netCDF-4 does not handle scalar numeric atts in HDF5
files. But this seems like something I should add.
I have made this a ticket in our project management database, you can follow
progress here:
https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/jira/browse/NCF-56
I'm not sure when this improvement will take place.
