Ah!  My mail system can't decode BASE64-encoded attachments.  Such stuff
appears as gobledygook (see below).

The above value for LD_NETCDF won't work because it's incomplete.  It
should, instead, have the following value:

    -L/usr/people/panb/lib -lnetcdf
